Policy

Studies in the African Past (SAP) is an international journal published once in a year by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage, University of Dar es Salaam. It aims at communicating the most significant archaeological discoveries, theoretical and methodological issues in archaeology. It also publishes research in heritage management and conservation studies across the continent. Manuscripts intended for publication should be written in English (British or American, so long as it is consistent throughout the article). Submissions are subjected to a blind-review process, usually at least two anonymous reviewers. Submissions can be: original fieldwork reports, original research articles, proceedings of conferences, or book reviews.

 Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the journal website http://journals.udsm.ac.tz/index.php/sap/ or email sap@udsm.ac.tz, or directly to editors in word format, double spaced, not exceeding 8000 words, including references. Figures and tables should be submitted as separate files. Images should have above 300 dpi quality resolution. Where applicable, authors should show respective sources of illustrations and evidence of copyright permission. Articles should start with abstract, not exceeding 200 words.

Citation and Reference: In-text citation should use the last name of the first and where applicable, second author and year of publication. In sources with more than two authors, only the last name of the first author is used, followed by the Latin abbreviation, ‘et al.’ (in italics). Reference list should be placed at the end of the manuscript. This should be arranged alphabetically, using the last names of authors. In entries with more than two authors, all of them should appear; ‘et al.’ does not apply here. Authors should thereafter use the APA reference management system.

Processing: Upon receipt of a contribution the editors will acknowledge receipt. Thereafter they will assess its relevance to the journal and submit it to at least two reviewers who are expert in the theme of the respective manuscript. Reviewers’ comments will determine acceptability or rejection of the given work for publication. Whichever the case, the contributor will be notified. In case of acceptance, the contributor will receive reviewers’ comments for corrections and send back to the editors for final editorial works including designing. Before printing, proofs will be sent to respective contributors for final approval. At this stage, only minor corrections, with no additional materials, will be accommodated.

For more information, authors are advised to read guidelines at the website of the journal: http://journals.udsm.ac.tz/index.php/sap/. Submissions prepared without following the guidelines will not be processed.
